The Samburu have altogether smaller settlements containing typically four independent families living in six or seven huts. A settlement with as many as fifteen huts is a large one by their standards. The fact that families are essentially independent is significant. It introduces a degree of flexibility into the organization of the settlement, and as the seasons change, so individual elders may choose to migrate with other families or separately.
